Web Design

My method to develop a great website

I build tableless websites that layout properly in Internet Explorer, Apple Safari, Firefox and Google Chrome, and are XHTML compliant.

What does that mean? Simply put, it means more people are able to use your site and gives you an advantage with search engines.

Development Schedule

These are the typical steps I take to build websites. The time each step takes depends on the complexity of your site and how quickly you respond to my questions. You will be able to view my work throughout the entire process to request changes, make critiques and provide guidance.

  • Questionnaire
10 simple questions to define your business, customers, employees, quality of workmanship, corporate standards, etc.
  • Sitemap
An outline of the pages and functions in your site that acts as a guide to build your site. The sitemap helps you decide which pages are most important and how they should be categorized because it allows you to easily visualize their structure.
  • Estimate
My quotes are usually within 5% of the final cost. There is rarely a cost overrun unless a client adds something to their project. I will never go over my contracted quote unless you approve of it in writing first, because I don't like surprises anymore than you do. If it turns out that your project took less time than estimated, I charge you only for the time I spent on your project. I require a deposit for 50% of the estimate to begin your project. When you say the site is complete I bill you for the remainder of the actual cost. Once payment has been made and you instruct me to do so, I launch your site for the world to see.
  • Contract
My contract defines the project, the terms, and the responsiblities of both you & I. It also gives you the right to take everything I use to make your site, including art, code, scripts, pages...everything...and move on to someone else. Many developers hold your site hostage and do not allow you to control your own site.
  • Design
Creation of custom art, user interface, style definitions, stock imagery selection, logo treatment, drop-navigation, etc. I use CSS and tableless design; every site is unique and custom built from scratch.
  • Content
Building all of the pages in your site and adding your text and photos to them. This is also when I take care of Flash, seo structure, file naming issues, meta-tags
  • Programming
The functional parts of your site; forms, scripts, online shopping, database interactivity, content management, etc. This phase is often either a negligible part of a project or else it is 90% of the work.
  • Debug
Testing everything to try to get your site to fail, so we can fix problems before your customers use it. This includes usability and accessibility, cross browser compatibility, printing quality, cell phone capable, scripting & database errors, etc.
  • Launch
Making your site live for the world to see. I launch sites so that they appear in the blink of an eye (or a press of your refresh button). Now you don't see it, now you do.
  • Marketing
Driving traffic to your website. I code sites in a manner that is optimized for whatever contents it contains, so we won't need to spend much time there because it's already done. To get immediate traffic, I'll manage your pay per click campaign and ad placements. We can also release blog articles, YouTube videos, press releases, and other marketing materials to gain incoming links to your site. Links pointing to your site means higher organic search engine results.
  • Maintenance
A regularly updated website keeps visitors coming back. The site I build you will be scalable so you can add more pages or whole sections of pages. I can make the changes you need, I can teach you how to update it yourself, or I can install a content management system during the programming phase.
